The Transfiguration 17 1After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2He was transformed[A] in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. 3Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here! If You want, I will make[B] three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered[C] them, and a voice from the cloud said:   This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him. Listen to Him!   6When the disciples heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified. 7Then Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” 8When they looked up they saw no one except Him[D]—Jesus alone. 9As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised[E] from the dead.” 10So the disciples questioned Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11“Elijah is coming[F] and will restore everything,” He replied.[G] 12“But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”[H] 13Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.   The Power of Faith over a Demon   14When they reached the crowd, a man approached and knelt down before Him. 15“Lord,” he said, “have mercy on my son, because he has seizures[I] and suffers severely. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16I brought him to Your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.” 17Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and rebellious[J] generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18Then Jesus rebuked the demon,[K] and it[L] came out of him, and from that moment[M] the boy was healed. 19Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 20“Because of your little faith,” He[N] told them. “For I assure you: If you have faith the size of[O] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. [21However, this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.][P]   The Second Prediction of His Death   22As they were meeting[Q] in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. 23They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.” And they were deeply distressed.   Paying the Temple Tax   24When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the double-drachma tax[R] approached Peter and said, “Doesn’t your Teacher pay the double-drachma tax?” 25“Yes,” he said. When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[S] “What do you think, Simon? Who do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes from? From their sons or from strangers?”[T] 26“From strangers,” he said.[U] “Then the sons are free,” Jesus told him. 27“But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.[V] Take it and give it to them for Me and you.”

I. A Higher Purpose Lazarus was a fried of Jesus and despite him being deathly sick, Jesus delayed in seeing Him. Lazarus died before Jesus arrived to Him. This sounds like the opposite of what a friend would do, especially a savior. Why did Jesus do this? Jesus wanted to perform a miracle so that they might believe. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” John 11:14-15 45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, John 11:45 Everything Jesus did was on a higher plane. Jesus was constantly looking through this life on Earth to the next life. The people needed to look before this life to the next, Jesus the eternal life-giver. This is why Jesus delayed, to being attention to this. 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, John 11:25 II. The Most Disappointing Day What do you think was the most disappointing day in Christ's life on this earth? Perhaps when the ten lepers were healed and only one returned to thank Him? Or maybe when the disciples constantly fell asleep while He prayed? Or perhaps it was when Peter, his most outspoken apostle, denied Him three times? What about when Judas, a friend and apostle, betrayed Him? Let me suggest another. Do you think it was the resurrection morning? What?! Really?! That was a day of victory! That was the best day right? Death had been defeated. Why would this be the most disappointed day? Think about it. Jesus may have very well been disappointed that day because nobody was there to greet Him. There was no crowd of followers waiting on His resurrection victory. There was no parade back to Jerusalem with the resurrected Savior whom the Jews killed. Jesus had foretold of His return to His disciples many times: 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Matthew 16:21 22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed. Matthew 17:22-23 17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” Matthew 20:17-19 You might say that possibly the disciples didn't understand. I mean, this was supernatural stuff right? No one had conquered death. How could the apostles have truly understood? Well, Christ's enemies believed and understood Him. 62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. Matthew 27:62-66 You see, even His enemies were prepared for the return of Jesus Christ. Why didn't His closest friends and followers believe Him? His friends thought He was dead (Luke 16:3; John 16:20)! The angel had to remind them when the women arrived! Still after the apostles were told, they did not believe. Of course, we all blame "Doubting Thomas" but really it was all of the disciples (John 20:24). 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. Mark 16:11 III. Two Great Days in Man's History The two greatest days in the history of mankind are Christ's resurrection and the return of Jesus Christ. We already missed the first one. Do not miss the second one. Christ's closest followers already missed the first greatest day. Will you miss the next great day, Judgment Day? Technically, you will not miss it, no one will, but will you be on Christ's side? If so, it's a great day. If not, it's the worst day for you in all of history. “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” John 14:1-4a 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11 Jesus alone has the power of death and Satan. This is why Jesus delayed in death of Lazarus, to prove He had the power over death. Somehow, His closest friends missed it while His enemies never forgot.
